Donald W. Campbell, Director

Donald W. Campbell is currently Group President, Military Simulation and Training with CAE. A native of Drayton, Ontario, Mr. Campbell joined the foreign service in 1964 after graduating with a B.A. (Honors) in Political Science and Economics from Waterloo University College. He undertook graduate studies in International Relations at Carleton University.

Mr. Campbell joined CAE after a long and distinguished career with Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. He served most recently as Deputy Foreign Minister, and as the Prime Minister's Personal Representative for G-8 Summits (1997-2000). In previous assignments, Mr. Campbell served as Canada's Ambassador to Japan (1993-1997) Deputy Minister for International Trade (1989-1993) and Canada's Ambassador to Korea (1984-1985).

As Assistant Deputy Minister (United States) 1985-1989, Mr. Campbell was deeply involved in the negotiation of the Canadian United States Free Trade Agreement and as Deputy Minister of Trade supervised the negotiation of the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

From 1964 to 1980, Mr. Campbell completed a wide range of assignments both home and abroad. He served in Kenya, the United Kingdom, Jamaica and the United States. In Canada, he held a series of senior assignments dealing with the international energy issues. He also served as Chairman of the Standing Committee on the International Oil Market of the International Energy Agency in Paris.

Mr. Campbell currently sits on the Board of Directors of Toyota Canada Inc. and the Perimeter Institute and in the past has served on the Board of Directors for the International Aviation Management Institute, the National Film Board and the Export Development Corporation. He has also served as Commissioner of the Northern Pipeline Agency and in December 1998, he was appointed by the Prime Minister to the Board of Governors of the Canadian Centre for Management Development.

In April 1999, Mr. Campbell received the Outstanding Achievement Award of the Public Service of Canada from the Governor General and the Prime Minister. In June 2000, he was conferred an Honorary Doctorate degree from the University of Ottawa and in June 2003 an Honorary Doctorate degree from Wilfred Laurier University.

In 2003 Mr. Campbell was appointed by the Prime Minister as the Canadian co-chairman of the Canada-Japan Forum, an external advisory group established by the governments of Japan and Canada to provide advice and to promote the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
